MEETING MINUTES

Meeting: North Star SHRM Chapter Meeting
Date: January 10, 2007
8:00 a.m.

Listed below is a recap of the items discussed at our last Chapter meeting:

DISCUSSION - WAYS TO INCREASE CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP/MEETING ATTENDANCE:
Discussion was held on ways to increase Chapter membership/meeting attendance. It was decided this could be achieved through:

  1. Personal invitations from current members
  2. Maintaining an up to date Web page
  3. Offering educational trainings that provide members with recertification credits

AGENDA ITEMS:
Agenda items for February and March meetings were discussed. Bruce Tyler proposed inviting Brian Kading from Track-1 Technology to discuss background checks and Michelle Pearson from Trust in Us to discuss Drug Testing for February.

For the March meeting Bruce suggested inviting Attorney Sheila Docken to present a training. She has developed various training seminars that she could present to us. Bruce advised that inasmuch as Sheila is in the process of developing a training business she most likely would be looking for payment for this service. Rhonda offered that in the past the Chapter has usually not paid for speakers, but has allowed them to promote their services briefly at the end of the meeting. Payments that have been made in the past were usually in the form of gift cards. Bruce would speak with Sheila and try to negotiate on payment. Bruce would also check into the steps necessary to secure credits for these topics and also arrange for the speakers.

Additional brainstorming discussions were held on ideas for future training sessions. Ideas included:

  1. Worker's Compensation - return to work
  2. The impact of Reduction in Force on HR/companies
  3. Metrics available to measure an HR Department
  4. Setting up an Apprenticeship/Intern programs
  5. Union Negotiations/How to maintain a union free shop
  6. Affirmative Action Plans

DISCUSSION - CO-SPONSORING SEMINAR:
Discussion was held regarding the invitation from St. Cloud Chapter for us to co-sponsor a seminar with their Chapter sometime in the first quarter of 07. They informed Rhonda they are planning to invite Eric Chester who spoke at the MN SHRM conference on Generation Y. His fee for 1½ hours is $10,000 and $15,000 for a full day. Invitations would be sent out to attendees of the MN SHRM conference and local chambers/members. It was decided that with the current size of our Chapter and the small number of members we currently have attending the monthly meetings that this would be a commitment beyond what we are able to provide. Rhonda would communicate to the St. Cloud Chapter our decision to decline their invitation to participate.

DISCUSSION - CO-SPONSORING SEMINAR:
Bruce discussed SHRM's 7th Core Value of members & retention. It was decided that the Chapter would join the Elk River and Big Lake Chambers of Commerce in an effort to promote the Chapter and inform individuals of our existence.
