Meeting:

North Star SHRM Chapter Meeting
|
|
Date:
|
June 11, 2008
8:00 a.m.
|
Listed below is a recap of the items discussed at our last Chapter
meeting:
-
Meeting was opened by President Bruce Tyler with group introductions. Our guest speaker today was: Dr. Steve
Manderscheid presenting "OD Skills for HR Professionals". One hour of PHR/SPHR recertification credit will
be available for those individuals attending. Bruce advised us that handouts were available for last month's
speaker.
- The following agenda items were discussed in the business
portion of meeting:
- A motion was made and passed to accept the May meeting minutes.
- Treasurer reported a balance as of 5/30/08 of $6,223.31.
- Bruce reported that he had attended the State Leadership Meeting last month and also that he had tote
bags available for anyone who would like some.
- No meeting will be held in July.
- Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 to be held at Connections in Big Lake at
8:00 am. It will be a program from National SHRM on Trust Travels: The Starbucks Story. In today's business
environment, trust is a fragile commodity. Although it is highly prized, it is often in short supply. Many
institutions are struggling to build and to maintain workplaces where values such as honesty, integrity and
respect define how they do business. Trust provides a foundation for exceptional performance. It underlies
risk-taking, accountability, service, creativity, customer loyalty, and a sustainable competitive edge. This
program will be a DVD presentation with discussion. It will be HRCI certified.
- The September meeting will be a joint meeting with the St. Cloud chapter with a national speaker
presenting on "Ten HR Challenges that should keep you up at night". It will be held at a golf club in St.
Cloud and is scheduled from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm with lunch and presentation. The St. Cloud chapter would like
to hold a golfing event following the presentation. Company hole sponsorships are available. Bruce would
like to see 2 teams from our chapter participate. Discussion was held regarding interest in the golf event -
no indication of high interest at this time. Bruce will send out an email with additional information at a
later time.
- Discussion was held regarding a question if any companies require proof of marriage, or dependents birth
certificates relating to health insurance. No other companies utilize this practice at this time.
- No additional items presented for discussions.
- Legislative Update
Janet Ampe advised no new current issues. Janet discussed the Upper Midwest Employment Law Institute
Conference which is held each May and is co-sponsored by Minnesota CLE, the MSBA Labor and Employment Law
Section and the Twin Cities Human Resource Association and encouraged members to consider attending this
conference in the future as it is not just for lawyers but also for HR Professionals. Also Janet reported
there is a new form for Independent Contractors, but that it may not be implemented until January. Janet
reminded us that individuals cannot release their rights to bring a suit with the EEOC or relating to FMLA
when being offered a severance.
